What Causes Gum Disease?

Gum disease, or periodontitis, plagues many more people than you’d imagine. It’s possibly one of the more common conditions people develop as they grow older, but you can get it at any age.

It’s usually a build-up of plaque on the teeth from lacking or improper brushing habits. However, there can be other causes as well.

Common Causes of Gum Disease

Plaque. This bacteria film forms on the teeth and causes subsequent problems with the gums. It can occur even with proper brushing and flossing.

Cigarette smoking. Smoking inhibits the function of gum tissue cells, making them more vulnerable to infections. Chewing tobacco or smoking cigars will have the same effect. Quitting is the best way to prevent this.

Crooked teeth. Bacteria have a way of hiding in tooth crevices and in between teeth. If you aren’t an avid flosser and you have crooked teeth, this could develop into a problem.

Prescriptions. Many common medications inhibit saliva flow leaving you with a very dry mouth. It is in this dry environment that bacteria can flourish.

Diet. If you eat a lot of sugar and carbohydrates, you could be putting your gums at risk. What is needed is a diet high in vitamin C and plenty of water daily.
